The Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has issued a firm admonition to special administrators in municipal councils, urging them to refrain from interfering with council operations. This warning comes in the wake of a large protest by workers at the Ba Town Council, who ceased work in protest against acting CEO Moshim Khan, who also holds the role of special administrator for the council.
Minister Nalumisa stressed that the responsibilities of special administrators should not extend to direct involvement in the operations of the councils. He has called for the prompt appointment of an acting CEO while Mr. Khan maintains his role as special administrator. Furthermore, the minister assured that the protesting employees would be compensated for the day they lost due to their strike.
Concerns have been voiced by Satish Chandra, an industrial officer with the National Union of Workers (NUW), regarding the treatment of employees under Mr. Khan’s administration. Chandra noted that workers have reported feeling threatened and disrespected, especially when attempting to express their grievances, which led to unjustified salary deductions without proper notice or consultation, potentially contravening labor laws.
Adding to the discontent, a union representative indicated that promises had been made for a 10% salary increase due in January, which has yet to be fulfilled, resulting in further disappointment amongst the workforce.
Despite the escalating concerns, Mr. Khan has claimed to have received no formal complaints or communications from the union regarding these issues.
This situation reflects broader challenges faced in local governance, as seen in previous articles that underscore the necessity for effective management and communication within Fiji’s local councils. The developments at Ba Town Council represent a significant moment where the initiation of proactive measures and the appointment of capable leadership could enhance working conditions and facilitate better community service.
These ongoing discussions highlight the critical importance of transparency and collaboration in cultivating a supportive work environment that ultimately benefits both employees and the residents of the Ba municipality. There remains a hopeful outlook that these dialogues will usher in positive changes in municipal governance in the future.
