A significant milestone was achieved with the grand opening of The Family Choice Supermarket & Cafe Pte Ltd in Walu Bay, Suva, after an investment of $200,000 by Custombilts Sheetmetal Co Ltd. The new supermarket, which was inaugurated amid much fanfare, is intended to cater comprehensively to the needs of the local community, offering a wide array of products from groceries to food and hardware.

Managing Director Laleena Kumar, who previously operated a hardware store, responded to requests from maritime customers for a supermarket that could meet their diverse needs. “When I started my hardware business, I received several requests from customers wanting a supermarket with everything under one roof,” Ms. Kumar stated, further highlighting her commitment to community service.

The establishment not only enhances shopping options for the local population but has also created 30 jobs, with nine being new positions introduced specifically for this venture. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, officiated the opening and commended the initiative as a powerful example of entrepreneurship and community support, emphasizing its role in boosting the local economy. “Supermarkets like Family Choice are crucial in supply chain management, providing market access for farmers, fishermen, and local producers,” he noted.

This supermarket joins a growing trend of community-oriented businesses that are emerging in the region, as seen with other recent openings such as Cagivou Supermarket, which also focuses on creating local employment opportunities. These businesses not only provide essential services but also contribute to the development and resiliency of the economy.

The emergence of Family Choice Supermarket reflects a hopeful outlook for local economic growth and community engagement. Such initiatives empower entrepreneurs while meeting the demands of the community, fostering a vibrant local economy. With the continuous rise of small and medium enterprises, the community stands to benefit significantly from improved access to essential goods and services.
