Heavy thunderstorms and significant lightning struck Nadi on Saturday night, leading to the temporary shutdown of runway edge lights. As a precautionary measure aligned with international aviation safety standards, several flights were diverted to Nausori International Airport and Faleolo International Airport in Apia, Samoa.

According to a statement from Fiji Airports, the lightning is believed to have struck between 2 PM and 3 PM. The problem was detected during a routine inspection shortly after 7:15 PM, prompting a swift response from the airport’s technical team. The runway lighting system was restored to full functionality by 8:30 PM.

In response to the disruptions, Fiji Airways has been working diligently to recover its operations, which experienced delays, diversions, and cancellations due to the inclement weather. The airline reported that several aircraft and flight crews remained at diversion airports.

“While the lighting has now been restored, a number of aircraft and crews are currently out of position, and our teams are working to reposition both aircraft and crew to resume scheduled services as quickly and safely as possible,” Fiji Airways stated. The airline also reassured passengers that they were in direct communication with those affected to confirm updated travel arrangements.

Among the flights impacted, Fiji Airways noted that four flights were diverted, including FJ 950, FJ 960, and FJ 274 to Nausori International Airport and FJ 910 to Faleolo International Airport in Samoa. Two departing flights also faced cancellations and delays, with FJ 413, which was supposed to depart at 8:00 PM, leaving at 8:45 PM, and FJ 915 cancelled due to Sydney’s curfew.

Despite the challenges presented by the weather, the swift response from both airport officials and Fiji Airways demonstrates a commitment to safety and prompt recovery efforts in navigating unexpected operational hurdles.
