Edward Nand, 28, and Salimoni Lagicere, 32, have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Narend Chand, a Canadian citizen originally from Fiji. The High Court in Suva, presided over by Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull, determined both men were guilty of premeditated murder tied to a catfishing scheme.

The court’s findings revealed that Nand manipulated the online dating system by impersonating a woman named Leba Ratabacaca, which led Chand to travel to Fiji under the false pretense of a romantic relationship. On February 19, 2023, after arriving in Nausori, Chand was brutally attacked by the two men. Lagicere strangled him with an electric cord that had been purchased by Nand, while Nand assaulted him with severe punches and ultimately delivered a fatal blow with a steel pipe.

In her remarks, Justice Bull condemned the brutality of the crime, stating that Chand was misled and betrayed by those he believed were friends. She pointed out that Lagicere’s only mitigating circumstance was his clean criminal record and his role as a caregiver for his mother, whereas Nand was reminded of the disgrace his actions brought upon his family.

Lagice has the possibility of parole after serving a minimum of 16 years, while Nand must serve at least 18 years before being eligible for parole. Both men have a 30-day period to appeal against their convictions.

This case serves to highlight the serious consequences of online deception, amplifying the urgent need for individuals to be aware of the risks involved in digital relationships. As society increasingly relies on online platforms for social interaction, the tragic outcome of Narend Chand’s case is a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with catfishing and deceitful online behavior.

It is hoped that this sentencing not only brings justice to Chand’s grieving family but also elevates public awareness about safety in online communications. Encouraging a cautious and vigilant approach to digital relationships may help prevent similar incidents in the future.
