Former Manu Samoa player and captain Lemalu Tusiata Pisi has been appointed as the new head coach for the Manu Samoa rugby team, marking an exciting new chapter for the organization. This announcement was made by Lakapi Samoa, highlighting Lemalu’s impressive resume which includes a recent role as an assistant coach during last year’s international matches, including the Pacific Nations Cup 2024 and the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Lemalu steps into the head coach position with immediate effect, just ahead of an upcoming match against Scotland on July 18 at Eden Park, New Zealand. With 42 international caps and experience in three Rugby World Cup tournaments, he is a well-respected figure in the rugby community, known for his leadership both on and off the field during his playing career.

Lakapi Samoa’s CEO, Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun, expressed confidence in Lemalu’s capability, stating that his leadership and deep connection to Samoan culture will be essential in nurturing team culture and pushing the team forward. Lemalu himself emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among players, invoking a Samoan proverb about togetherness as essential for building a legacy.

Lemalu’s storied rugby background began in Apia, Samoa, and took him across several significant teams, including a notable tenure with North Harbour in New Zealand and clubs in Japan and France. He made his international debut with the Pacific Islanders in 2006 before officially representing Samoa in 2011. Over his career, Lemalu accumulated substantial achievements, culminating in his transition into coaching, where he has served in various roles, including his recent position with Toyota Industries Shuttles Rugby Aichi in Japan since 2021.

As Lemalu embarks on this new coaching venture, there is optimism for his ability to inspire the next generation of Samoan rugby talent. He aims to harness the same passion and dedication that characterized his playing days to build a resilient and competitive team.

With the upcoming international fixtures on the horizon, there’s much anticipation for how Lemalu will lead Manu Samoa as they strive for success on the global rugby stage. His background and vision for a cohesive team environment not only foster hope but also set a promising tone for the future of Samoan rugby.
