Banuve Tabakaucoro, a former Olympian and celebrated athlete, has shared powerful advice for young athletes as they kick off the Coca-Cola Games. He emphasized the importance of patience and dedication in pursuing their aspirations. The Coca-Cola Games, an event that celebrates young athletic talent, holds special significance in Fiji as it showcases the hard work and dreams of participants.

Tabakaucoro, a standout sprinter during his time, urged athletes to maintain their focus and heart in their endeavors. He recognized the emotional highs experienced by winning athletes and pointed out that while many see the successes, few understand the struggles leading to those victories. His record times of 10.43 seconds in the senior boys’ 100 meters and 21.04 seconds in the 200 meters, set in 2011, still resonate today as benchmarks for new competitors.

This year’s Coca-Cola Games, which take place at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, is expected to attract over 2,600 athletes and generates considerable excitement in the community. The event not only reflects athletic prowess but also community spirit and unity, with several competitors highlighting their dedication and hopes for achieving personal bests and team support.

Similar sentiments were echoed by other athletes, such as Sitiveni Koroituku, who is determined to secure a gold medal after a bronze performance in the previous year. Waisiki Komainaiqoro, another aspiring athlete, is looking to make a mark in the senior division after earning a silver medal recently. Their experiences underline a collective ambition among young Fijians to excel in sports, supported by their families and communities.

In the context of increasing opportunities in athletics, Tabakaucoro’s insights serve as a reminder that the journey of an athlete requires unwavering belief in oneself, resilience, and patience, embracing both the challenges and triumphs along the way.
