Eswa Nadan, affectionately known as “Ninja,” remains a revered figure in Fijian football, celebrated for his contributions to the sport over several decades. Recently, the Fiji Football Association honored him by inducting him into their Legends Programme during a ceremony held in Nadi on December 1. At 58 years old, Nadan, who now runs a successful air-conditioning and refrigeration business in Sydney, Australia, continues to inspire the football community.
Beginning his football journey in primary school in 1977, Nadan has always sought to build a legacy through the sport. He recalls his first significant moment in football, scoring the winning goal for Nadi Sangam Primary School in the Inter Primary competition, igniting his passion for the game.
In high school, Nadan initially prioritized academics but soon found himself playing for his village team, Navo Sports Club. Their impressive unbeaten streak led them to the senior division, where he scored vital goals that facilitated their promotion to the premier division. His dedication grew as he trained against top clubs, honing his skills and making a name for himself on the local scene.
He debuted for the Nadi team in 1987, marking his first game with a goal against Suva. Throughout his career, he contributed to memorable matches, such as ending Lautoka’s 15-match unbeaten streak, where he scored the decisive goal despite being injured.
After retiring from professional play in 1994 due to injury, Nadan shifted his focus to coaching, mentoring youth teams and leading them to significant victories. Upon relocating to Australia in 2001, he founded the Nadi Veterans Club, nurturing the Fijian football community across various competitions, including international tournaments in New Zealand.
Most recently, Nadan took on the role of Head Coach for the Australia Fiji Football Incorporated (AuFFI) All Stars during the Pacific Cup in Lautoka, demonstrating his commitment to the sport’s growth. He aspires to unite the Fijian diaspora in Australia through football and sees upcoming initiatives like the U16 competition as vital for fostering youth talent.
