A hearing is set to address the legal complexities surrounding the case of three suspended police officers charged with manslaughter. The officers—Maciu Vakaturaga, Isireli Raseisei, and Joshua Bull—were present in front of Justice Thushara Rajasinghe in Suva.

Justice Rajasinghe noted that a few weeks would be needed to finalize the judgment in this matter, which stems from the alleged assault that resulted in the death of Mikaele Tikoivalenibula in February 2022. The officers are accused of attacking Tikoivalenibula at various times while he was held in custody at the Samabula Police Station.

During the proceedings, the judge raised several legal issues that must be resolved prior to delivering the verdict. Both the State and the defense engaged in discussions to clarify the roles of the officers in the incident, including whether there was one principal offender or multiple assailants.

Defense lawyers, Shirley Tivao and Joji Cakau, argued that any defects in the charge could significantly impact their clients. Following extensive discussions, Judge Rajasinghe allowed further submissions from the defense to adequately address these critical issues.

The hearing focusing on legal matters will reconvene on December 12.

This case highlights the importance of due process in the legal system, underscoring the need for thorough examinations of all pertinent facts before a judgment can be made. As the legal proceedings continue, there is hope that justice will prevail and that the case will be resolved fairly for all involved.
