Pio Bosco Tikoisuva, a revered figure in Fiji Rugby, has left an indelible mark on the sport since his debut in 1968. At 78 years old, Tikoisuva reflects on a storied career that includes 19 Tests for Fiji between 1968 and 1979. Notably, his performance in the 1977 match against the British Lions in Suva is hailed as the pinnacle of his achievements.

Recalling the memorable encounter, Tikoisuva noted the Lions’ coach complimented his team by stating, “we played against 15 horses,” to which Tikoisuva proudly responded, “we are the Flying Fijians.” This match not only showcased Fiji’s strength but also marked a definitive moment in Tikoisuva’s career, particularly as he secured a critical drop goal during the match, ultimately leading to their victory.

His career took him to England, where he became the first person of color to join the Harlequins rugby club, playing from 1972 to 1976. Tikoisuva transitioned from playing wing to the pivotal role of first five-eighth, honing his kicking skills during his time in England. He fondly recalls how his experiences there contributed to his success in subsequent matches, particularly the historic clash against the British Lions.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Tikoisuva launched a biography titled “Emperor Bosco” in 2021, sharing insights and experiences from his rugby journey. He emphasizes the importance of commitment and progressive training schedules to aspiring rugby players, encouraging them to pursue excellence in their careers.

Tikoisuva’s story resonates with the younger generation of rugby players in Fiji, as it parallels the journeys of contemporary athletes like Mario Tikoisuva, who recently showcased his talent in the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s. Both players exemplify the spirit of determination and hope that underpins Fijian rugby, inspiring future generations to reach for their dreams on the international stage.

The legacies of players like Pio Bosco Tikoisuva remind us of the rich heritage of Fijian rugby and the potential for continued excellence in the sport. With the unwavering passion and talent present in Fiji, the future of rugby appears bright, echoing the encouragement Tikoisuva extends to young players.
