Residents of Ledrusasa in Nadi celebrated a significant milestone yesterday as they received their land leases from the Housing Minister. This momentous occasion marked the end of a challenging period for the community, which had struggled with setbacks due to the absence of an official scheme plan since the project’s inception. The construction of homes was done without a proper layout, creating a range of difficulties for the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

Minister Maciu Nalumisa emphasized the importance of the new titles, stating they provide families with legal security and an opportunity to create stronger, more stable homes. He noted that previous disputes over driveways and boundaries arose from the settlement lacking a proper planning framework—a challenge that unfortunately mirrors situations in other informal housing areas across the nation.

During the event, the Minister urged the newly titled families to honor their ownership by taking responsibility for their environment. He encouraged them to maintain their surroundings, foster respectful relationships with their neighbors, and contribute positively to the community. “Cherish this moment,” said Nalumisa. “Use your lease wisely to build stronger homes, healthier families, and brighter futures.”

The handover of these land leases symbolizes a new beginning for the residents of Ledrusasa and reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to upgrading informal settlements throughout Fiji. This initiative aims to ensure that families can live with dignity, stability, and hope, paving the way for a brighter future for the community.
