Laveti Ma’afu exemplifies the evolving role of women in society by transitioning from traditional village life to entrepreneurial ventures. Her inspiring journey was highlighted in an article published in The Fiji Times on April 2, 1992, illustrating how the Tubou, Lakeba, Lau native leveraged her skills to make a living.

Focused on crafting various forms of basket ware using magimagi, or coconut sinnet, Laveti recalls a childhood spent learning these skills from her mother and grandmother while her elder sisters pursued education in Suva. The culmination of her efforts was celebrated on the evening of March 30, 1992, when a large crowd gathered at the Australia and New Zealand Bank for the launch of her craft exhibition. The showcased products included finely woven baskets and other household items.

Laveti received substantial support in organizing a series of exhibitions across the country, courtesy of the Fiji Arts Council, the University of the South Pacific’s Fiji Centre, and the ANZ Bank, with funding provided by the South Pacific Cultures Fund. During the launch, Adi Ateca Ganilau, wife of the Commander of the Fiji Military Forces, emphasized the significance of magimagi, particularly in Lau, where it has historical uses such as measuring land and creating fishing nets. She noted that magimagi was traditionally preferred over nails for constructing bure because of its durability.

Adi Ganilau expressed pride in the revitalization of such crafts, which not only supports local heritage but also empowers women in their communities. Additionally, during that same week, a course was conducted for 20 representatives from various government and non-government departments. This training, organized by the Department of Women Affairs and Culture alongside the International Labour Organization at the Hans Seidel Foundation in Nadave, aimed to equip participants with the necessary skills to support aspiring women entrepreneurs like Laveti.

The events surrounding Laveti Ma’afu’s story reflect a broader movement towards empowering women and preserving cultural practices, creating a hopeful outlook for the future as communities recognize and celebrate their indigenous skills and knowledge.
