The Lautoka Chamber of Commerce, along with local police leadership, is observing a notable shift in crime dynamics within the city. While there has been a decline in serious offenses, there is a concerning rise in public nuisance instances related to intoxication.

Richard Shafiq, president of the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce, highlighted that serious crimes such as break-ins have stabilized, largely attributed to an increased police presence in the area. “Currently, I could say that the crime rate in Lautoka is more controlled than in previous years. The main issue now involves individuals who are intoxicated loitering around,” he noted.

Shafiq acknowledged that Lautoka’s crime rate is relatively more favorable when compared to larger urban centers like Suva, but local business owners confront unique social challenges due to public behavior. He pointed out, “While serious crimes have decreased, we are still facing problems with intoxicated individuals dancing and sleeping in front of shops. That is our priority concern at the moment.”

He expressed appreciation for the heightened police patrols, especially during the festive season, which have contributed to controlling issues related to break-ins. “Overall, the situation has improved,” he remarked.

Divisional Police Commander West SSP Iakobo Vaisewa reiterated the focus on addressing public intoxication and maintaining order. “It’s a general reduction in crime, and I thank the community for their support. They are becoming more proactive about their own security,” he stated. Vaisewa affirmed that the police are strict in managing offenses related to alcohol and drugs in public spaces, emphasizing that they have been making arrests of individuals for public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

As Lautoka continues to work on these challenges, the collaboration between the police and the community suggests a hopeful path toward maintaining safety and order during the festive season and beyond.
