Ongoing upgrades at Churchill Park in Lautoka are set to enhance the city’s economy and provide a high-quality experience during the upcoming Sun Bell Battle of Fiji match on February 6. Taitusi Rasoki, chair of the Lautoka Board of Special Administrators, emphasized the financial importance of the event, noting a standing agreement with the Fijian Drua franchise that allows the council to benefit from gate takings and related revenue.

Rasoki stated that major sporting events draw increased crowds to Lautoka, which in turn benefits local businesses. He mentioned that the current renovations focus on player facilities and improving ground conditions, with negotiations ongoing for a new agreement with the Drua franchise.

Recently completed upgrades include maintenance of the Y2E stand, shore realignment, and pavement improvements. Planned enhancements involve upgrades to the pavilion and lawn areas, air conditioning in changing rooms, and continued turf maintenance.

The anticipated financial advantages from the game are significant, with Rasoki noting that many attendees will arrive by car, leading to increased revenue from parking meters, in addition to the anticipated gate takings and boosts to accommodation and hospitality services. He pointed out that the influx of international visitors will further bolster the GDP and overall national economy.

Richard Shafiq from the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce echoed these sentiments, stating that retailers are preparing for a substantial economic surge in anticipation of the tournament, which could attract thousands of spectators to Churchill Park. Shafiq highlighted that events bringing in this number of attendees are beneficial for local businesses and stressed the need for more such tournaments in the future to enhance Lautoka’s status in the business community.

The Chamber is actively collaborating with local authorities, stakeholders, and transportation services like bus and taxi operators, and the Fiji Police Force, to accommodate the expected influx of visitors. This forward-thinking approach is aimed at ensuring smooth operations and maximizing the economic opportunities presented by the upcoming match and future sporting events in Lautoka, promising a brighter outlook for the local economy.
