The Lautoka Rugby Union is preparing to kick off its season with an exciting franchise competition slated for early next month. The launch, however, experienced a slight delay as officials sought sponsors for team jerseys, a crucial element for the event according to head coach Peniona Ranitu. He remarked, “We have postponed our franchise to early next month because we are still looking for sponsors for jerseys.” This franchise competition is set to last eight weeks and plays a significant role in the selection process for the Lautoka Maroon squad, which will be finalized at the tournament’s conclusion.

In a progressive development, the Lautoka Rugby Union will also debut a women’s competition this season, aiming to promote inclusivity and elevate women’s rugby in the region. Ranitu expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, stating, “We are grateful that the women’s competition will be part of us this season.” The plan is to field at least four women’s teams, which will facilitate direct player selection for the women’s squad based on their performance throughout the competition rather than individual scouting.

This step represents a noteworthy advancement for women’s rugby in Lautoka, reflecting broader movements in Fiji’s national rugby landscape that strive to enhance women’s participation in the sport. The introduction of women’s competitions aligns seamlessly with the Fiji Rugby Union’s commitment to gender equality, providing vital opportunities for female athletes.

By fostering a strong women’s competition, Lautoka Rugby Union not only enhances the visibility of female players but also cultivates an environment that inspires young women to engage in sports. This initiative presents a promising outlook for women’s rugby in Fiji, with hopes for increased participation and recognition across the region, emphasizing the vital role of inclusivity in athletics.
