A two-bedroom home on Saru Back Road in Lautoka was completely destroyed by fire during the early hours of Sunday morning. The property, owned by 30-year-old Binitesh Sharma and his 72-year-old mother, Veenat Kumari, sits outside the designated fire boundary area.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) reported that the fire likely began after Sharma placed a mobile phone on charge before retiring for the night. Waking up to a sparking noise, he quickly detected heat and smoke and noticed flames spreading on the walls. He promptly alerted his mother, and both were able to evacuate the home safely, avoiding any injuries.

The damage from the fire is estimated to be around $80,000, representing a total loss of the home. As investigations continue, initial findings point to an electrical fault associated with the mobile phone’s charging equipment as a potential cause of the fire.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of electrical safety, particularly when charging devices. Taking necessary precautions can help prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
