Lautoka’s main bus terminal has officially completed its first major upgrade in 42 years, marking a significant milestone for Fiji’s second-largest city. The long-awaited redevelopment culminated today, following several months of renovation work aimed at enhancing safety, accessibility, and the overall convenience for commuters.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “It has taken the council 42 years to upgrade this bus station.” The renovation includes the installation of new pavements, the addition of 16 new CCTV cameras, and a resealed market and unloading bay, transforming the terminal into a modern transport hub.
The upgrade, which cost nearly $2.8 million and was entirely funded by local ratepayers without resorting to external borrowing, is expected to significantly benefit the thousands of daily users, especially students and working families. Lautoka City Council Chair Tevita Rasoki emphasized that the previous terminal had severely deteriorated, with large potholes and other issues demanding urgent action. He remarked, “Residents deserve a modern, high-standard bus station that is safe, efficient, and easy to use.”
In line with the upgrade, students in Lautoka will be welcomed by a newly renovated terminal as they return to school tomorrow. This development is poised to alleviate congestion, improve traffic flow, and enhance the safety of commuters, representing a substantial investment in public transport and urban infrastructure that aligns with the growing needs of the city.
