Members of the Lautoka Lawn Bowls Association have raised alarm following the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) recent announcement regarding the potential sale of the Lautoka Bowling Club, a crucial venue for local bowlers. FSC CEO Bhan Pratap Singh revealed that the club is part of the company’s strategic asset review, and it is currently undergoing a tender process. However, specific details about the sale, including the price and conditions, remain undisclosed due to the sensitive nature of the transaction.

The bowling community in Lautoka has voiced significant concerns over the fate of the club, which serves as a vital training hub for many of Fiji’s top bowlers. One association member expressed apprehension that the sale could disrupt their competitive schedules and hinder future tournaments, noting, “Bowling is a minor sport, and there’s nothing much we can do.”

In response to these concerns, players and officials are calling for government intervention to preserve the Bowling Club. They are advocating for the government to invest in the purchase of the land, along with renovations and enhancements to the facility, ensuring that community access to the sport remains intact.

This development aligns with previously observed trends regarding FSC’s strategic move towards divesting non-core assets to improve operational efficiency and profitability. While these decisions can be economically motivated, they also prompt considerations about the implications for local sports facilities and community resources.

Despite the challenges posed by the potential sale of the Lautoka Bowling Club, there is a glimmer of hope that this situation could catalyze government support and investment. The hope is that collaboration within the local community may lead to solutions that safeguard the future of lawn bowls in Lautoka, ensuring that the sport continues to thrive and develop.
