Limited connectivity and infrastructure challenges in the Lau Group are posing hindrances to tourism and service delivery. Recognizing this issue, the government has formed a 56-member, multi-agency Lau Tourism Scoping Mission, which returned to Suva on Sunday after completing its assessment.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka highlighted that the mission aims to facilitate coordinated planning for the enhancement of the outer islands. The delegation focused its efforts on Vanuabalavu, where it conducted site visits to Daliconi Village, inspecting key aspects related to the development of tourism and transportation.

Among the mission’s key achievements was a technical assessment of the Vanuabalavu Airstrip, which reviewed aviation access to the island. The mission also introduced enhanced connectivity by installing a Starlink satellite kit, significantly improving communication for the village.

In addition to Vanuabalavu, the team explored potential tourist attractions at Qilaqila Bay of Islands and Nabavatu Island, concluding their island tour with a stop at Lomaloma before heading back to Suva. A significant moment of respect occurred during the mission when a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the burial site of the late Prime Minister and Tui Kuboca, Laisenia Qarase. Gavoka and the United Nations Resident Coordinator for the Pacific, Dirk Wagener, jointly laid the wreath as a tribute.

The day concluded with a culturally enriching lunch hosted by Leba Qarase at her residence in Mavana Village. Officials emphasized that the findings from this mission will play a crucial role in guiding future decisions regarding tourism expansion, connectivity, and essential services in the Lau Group, paving the way for improved quality of life and economic opportunities in the region.
