In an exciting start to the inaugural OFC Pro League, Vanuatu United FC and Extra Bula FC played to a thrilling 2-2 draw at Eden Park in Auckland. The match saw a last-minute goal from William Cardona, which secured a hard-fought point for Vanuatu after trailing during parts of the game.
Extra Bula FC, the first professional football team from Fiji, began the match with determination, dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities. However, they were unable to capitalize on their chances, largely due to a resilient Vanuatu defense. It was Vanuatu that struck first, with Bill Kaltack finding the net via a header. Initially, it was thought that the goal was scored by Alex Saniel, but a review by VAR clarified the scorer.
The lead was short-lived, lasting just ten minutes. In the 31st minute, a well-placed corner kick from dynamic winger Kaile Auvray deflected off Sterling Vasconcellos, allowing captain Roy Krishna to score the equalizer, bringing the teams into the halftime break at 1-1.
The second half mirrored the first, with Extra Bula FC maintaining control and creating multiple chances without finding the finishing touch. It wasn’t until the 69th minute that Auvray showcased his skill again, delivering a precise kick that found Nabil Begg, who calmly put Extra Bula FC ahead 2-1.
As the game neared its conclusion, Vanuatu mounted significant pressure, ultimately leading to Cardona’s late goal that ensured they took home a point.
Extra Bula FC will look to bounce back in their next match against South Island FC on Tuesday, January 20, at Santos Stadium in Papua New Guinea. With the competitive spirit demonstrated in this initial match, both teams have provided fans with an optimistic glimpse into the excitement the OFC Pro League promises for the future.
