The upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, taking place from January 16 to 18, 2025, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, is set to be a historic occasion, potentially marking the last appearance of renowned rugby icons Jerry Tuwai and Rosko Specman on the sevens rugby field. Both players will unite as part of the Mike Friday Select 7s team, creating significant excitement among fans who have long awaited this moment.

Jerry Tuwai, revered as a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, has recently added a silver medal from the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics to his impressive list of achievements. His career embodies the spirit of Fijian rugby, characterized by humility, flair, and extraordinary leadership on the field.

In contrast, Rosko Specman, affectionately known as “Specmagic,” brings to the team his remarkable speed and agility. He was a pivotal player for South Africa during their successful 2017/2018 HSBC World Series campaign and has since seamlessly transitioned to 15s rugby, competing with the Cheetahs in the Pro 14 league. Specman also boasts bronze medals from the Rio (2016) and Paris (2024) Olympics.

This tournament is particularly meaningful, as it will be the first occasion Tuwai and Specman play as teammates after years of competing as rivals in various international competitions. The Mike Friday Select 7s team will also feature notable players, including former Irish 7s captain Harry McNulty and American talent Matai Leuta, alongside promising Fijian athletes such as Lasaro Bogisa and Iowane Teba.

With 44 teams participating—16 men’s, 16 youth, and 12 women’s teams—the Coral Coast 7s promises to deliver an exciting and diverse showcase of talent. This blend of local and international players highlights the deep-rooted significance of rugby within Fijian culture, inspiring budding athletes and fostering community spirit.

As excitement builds for this notable event, it reflects not only a potential farewell to Tuwai and Specman but an uplifting celebration of rugby itself. The free admission policy allows fans from all backgrounds to attend, promoting unity and engagement within the community. This tournament stands as a beacon of hope for the future of the sport, encouraging the nurturing of talent and passion among young athletes.

In summary, the Coral Coast 7s is poised to be a memorable event that merges the talents of established stars with the enthusiasm of emerging players, reinforcing the rich rugby heritage of Fiji and inspiring future generations.
