A landslide near Savusavu Hospital has raised significant safety concerns and halted critical upgrade plans for the facility. The Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, indicated that the landslide has compromised areas vital for public health staff, leading to notable occupational health and safety risks.
According to Ravunawa, the delay in major structural expansion or reconfiguration of the hospital buildings will persist until the area is stabilized and cleared. The safety of employees is currently a top priority for both the Health and Public Works ministries. He expressed admiration for the unwavering commitment of health workers who continue to serve the community under challenging circumstances.
During a recent visit to the hospital, the minister engaged with doctors, nurses, and frontline staff, acknowledging the difficulties they face with inadequate infrastructure, limited manpower, and scarce resources. They discussed various pressing matters affecting service delivery, such as infrastructure issues, human resources, accommodation, support for transport, medical supplies, and future development plans.
Furthermore, Ravunawa provided staff with updates on ongoing legislative reviews within the ministry as well as Fiji’s strategic direction aimed at strengthening primary health care and advancing toward universal health coverage. Despite the challenges posed by the landslide, the dedication of health workers underscores a resilient commitment to serving the community, fostering hope for improved conditions in the future.
