Landowners in Namosi, opposed to mining initiatives on their properties, have criticized Filimoni Vosarogo, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, labeling his recent comments as “unprofessional.” This reaction comes after Vosarogo questioned the credentials of Sipiriano Nariva, the chairman of the Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA), regarding his role within the iTaukei administrative system.

LAMA issued a statement asserting that Vosarogo’s harsh remarks about Nariva demonstrate a disconnect from the community’s voice, suggesting that the minister favors Tui Namosi’s interests instead of genuinely engaging with the landowners. The organization emphasized that neither Vosarogo nor Tui Namosi holds ownership over the lands slated for mining exploration, affirming that Sipiriano Nariva is authorized to represent the landowners’ interests.

The statement urged Vosarogo to broaden his consultations and listen to all landowners rather than just a select few. They highlighted that the discussions about mining licenses are not only about the Nabukebuke clan, but also involve numerous landowners represented by LAMA. They expressed concern that Vosarogo has not visited Namosi to hear the sentiments of the affected communities firsthand, instead relying on his connection with Tui Namosi.

In response, Vosarogo indicated that he would address these concerns in an upcoming meeting with the Mataqali Nabukebuke, scheduled for mid-2025.

This situation reflects a crucial dialogue between government representatives and local communities, emphasizing the need for open communication and acknowledgment of landowners’ rights. The ongoing discussions may pave the way for a more inclusive approach to development that respects the voices of the affected communities.

Positive engagement and transparency moving forward could foster better relationships and collaborative outcomes for both landowners and development initiatives, emphasizing a shared goal of sustainable progress.
