Traffic congestion near the Damodar Complex in Labasa is attributed to ongoing road construction rather than the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s tramline, according to Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh. Singh clarified that the issues stem from contractor operations and restricted access to the complex, leading to significant traffic buildup. He emphasized that FSC has not obstructed access.

Singh pointed out the need for urgent measures to alleviate the congestion, stating, “When the development started, they should have taken into consideration the problem they could face.” His emphasis on proactive planning suggests a recognition of the importance of infrastructure development in managing traffic flow effectively.

Adding to the discussion, Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad highlighted that increased investment in Vanua Levu is leading to more infrastructure projects, which involve frequent roadworks in the region. He noted that this aligns with an integrated approach to enhance the economy of Vanua Levu through commercial agriculture projects.

As the construction progresses, police presence and traffic controls during peak hours are being implemented to help manage the congestion in Labasa town. This demonstrates a commitment from local authorities to improve traffic conditions while crucial infrastructure developments are underway.

Despite the current challenges, the focus on improving infrastructure is a positive sign for future traffic management in Labasa. With renewed emphasis on development, residents can be hopeful that these issues will be resolved, paving the way for a smoother traffic experience in the long run.
