Labasa’s Subrail Park is currently undergoing close monitoring by the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) as it prepares to be the main venue for the highly anticipated Battle of the Giants (BOG) tournament. Recent upgrades are in progress, including extensive work by electrical contractors on the floodlights and other important construction efforts aimed at enhancing the venue.
Fiji FA CEO Mohammad Yusuf expressed his concerns regarding the park’s condition, which has reportedly worsened after heavy trucks were driven on the field during the Girmit Celebration in May. Yusuf stated, “If we are not happy, we are putting a warning, we would probably move the BOG away because we need the best of the grounds to cater for the best team in Fiji to play.” This highlights the need for immediate action to ensure that the venue meets the required standards for such a prestigious event.
Labasa Town Council’s Properties Officer, Isoa Katiatini, reassured that the team is working diligently to prepare the ground in time for BOG 2025, which is scheduled for August 1st to 3rd. He affirmed that the council is fully committed to completing the necessary work to ensure the park is in optimal condition.
Recent developments indicate that the collaboration between Fiji FA, Heritage Fiji, and local authorities reflects a community effort to bolster both the sporting and economic aspects of Labasa. Notably, the area was recently celebrated for successfully hosting the Digicel Fiji FACT tournament, which showcased the local enthusiasm for football.
This positive engagement from various stakeholders bodes well for Labasa’s future as a sports tourism hub, promoting local pride and encouraging economic development in the region. With the expected influx of teams and supporters for the BOG, Labasa has the opportunity to shine both on and off the field, fostering excitement and community spirit in the lead-up to the tournament.
