Families eagerly awaiting the opening of the long-awaited gas crematorium in Tuatua, Labasa, will need to be patient for a few more months as the facility’s construction is not yet complete. Originally slated to open in December of the previous year, the crematorium is now delayed due to pending installation work, with no fixed date for its completion.
Multi-Ethnic Affairs Minister Charan Jeath Singh shared that much of the significant construction has been accomplished. He stated, “The building is complete, and the gas unit is already at the site.” However, he highlighted that progress has stalled pending the arrival of specialized technicians from India, who are essential for the installation of the equipment. “We are waiting for technicians from India to install the equipment. Once that is done, phase one of the project will be completed,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Singh mentioned that the second phase of the project will focus on improving access to the crematorium. “Phase two involves constructing a driveway from the site to the main road,” he added.
The completion of both phases is necessary before the facility can officially open. The Government has invested over $250,000 into the construction of the gas crematorium, underscoring its commitment to enhancing local services for families in the Labasa region. While the delay is disappointing, there is hope that the final steps towards its opening will ensure a modern facility that meets the community’s needs.
