The Labasa Youth Under-16 football team is determined to defend their title in the Fiji Football Association’s Digicel U16 Youth League Northern next season. Recently, five of the team’s members, Zaman Shah, Meli Goneva, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi, participated in trials for the national U16 team, with Rovonukula, Lal, and Natubatilagi earning selections.
Rovonukula, who hails from Tabia and is a student at Labasa Sangam College, is the team captain. The national U16 team secured a victory that has now allowed them to qualify for the upcoming FIFA World Cup U17.
During a thanksgiving event held at Vunivau last weekend, Labasa Youth U16 coach Shalendra Swami expressed his gratitude towards the 30-member squad. Players come from various schools including Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College, All Saints Secondary School, Labasa College, Labasa Sangam College, Batinikama College, Labasa Muslim College, and Vunimoli Islamia College.
Throughout the year, the team played ten matches against Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi, achieving an impressive record of eight wins, one draw against Seaqaqa, and one loss to Dreketi, while scoring a remarkable total of 68 goals.
Zaman Shah was also nominated for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year award during the Fiji FA Awards Night 2024. Coach Swami, who has returned to lead the squad after previously coaching in 2020 and 2021, expressed his commitment to winning next year’s league and developing more players for the national team.
