The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is determined to defend its title in the Fiji Football Association’s (Fiji FA) Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League Northern competition next year. This aspiration comes on the heels of an impressive performance this past season, which saw the team dominate in matches throughout the year.

Among the squad, five players—Zaman Shah, Meli Goneva, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi—participated in the Fiji U16 trials, with Rovonukula, Lal, and Natubatilagi successfully making the national team. Rovonukula, a student at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College, led the team as captain.

Following the conclusion of their season, the young athletes celebrated their achievements at a thanksgiving event in Vunivau. During this event, their coach, Shalendra Swami, expressed gratitude to the 30-member squad. The players hail from various institutions, including Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College, All Saints Secondary School, Labasa College, and others across the region.

This past season, the team faced off against opponents such as Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi, achieving a remarkable record of eight wins, one draw against Seaqaqa, and only one loss to Dreketi. Their performance included an impressive tally of 68 goals, showcasing their offensive strength.

Additionally, Zaman Shah earned recognition as a nominee for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year at the Fiji FA Awards Night 2024, highlighting the individual talent coming from the team.

Coach Swami, who returned to lead the squad after previous coaching stints in 2020 and 2021, reaffirmed his commitment to not only winning next year’s league title but also to nurturing more players for future national team opportunities.

The Labasa Youth Under-16 team’s dedication and success offer a bright outlook for the future of youth football in Fiji, fostering talent and enthusiasm among young players.

Summary: The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is focused on retaining their Northern title in the Fiji U16 Youth League next year, following a strong season with the captain leading three players to the national trials. Coach Shalendra Swami aims to enhance player development and continue the team’s winning tradition, reflecting a hopeful future for youth football in the region.
