The Labasa Taxi Association is urging local authorities to adopt stricter measures against illegal taxi operators as the new year unfolds. The call comes amid rising concerns regarding the escalating number of private vehicles unlawfully functioning as taxis in Labasa Town.
Mahen Prasad, the Association President, highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that illegal operators have been proliferating despite ongoing complaints directed to the Police Traffic Department and the Land Transport Authority. He expressed disappointment over the lack of effective action, which he feels has allowed the issue to deteriorate further.
Prasad emphasized the plight of licensed taxi operators who adhere to regulations and fulfill all necessary fees, stating, “We are tenants of the Town Council and are authorized to operate and provide services to the public from the Market Taxi Stand. However, over the past three weeks following Christmas and New Year, we have seen private vehicles forcefully entering the Market Taxi Stand and operating illegally from there.”
This scenario not only undermines the integrity of licensed operators but also creates an unfair competitive environment, as illegal operators reap benefits without repercussions. Prasad expressed hope that authorities would bolster their enforcement efforts, proposing that addressing illegal taxi operations could alleviate the ongoing challenges faced by legitimate taxi drivers in Labasa.
As the community looks forward to a new year, the Labasa Taxi Association remains committed to advocating for solutions that protect both the interests of compliant operators and the safety of the public.
