The Children’s Ward at Labasa Hospital has been closed for more than a year, as confirmed by Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa. The closure is due to ongoing renovations aimed at upgrading the facility, with electrical upgrades causing delays in the project.
In an effort to ensure continuous care for pediatric patients during this time, patients have been temporarily moved to the TB Ward, with additional overflow accommodating in other parts of the hospital. Ravunawa assured that the renovations are proceeding, particularly now that Energy Fiji Ltd has approved the resumption of electrical work. He expressed optimism that the ward will be operational by March, contingent upon confirmation from both the contractor and the Asset Management Unit.
This investment in the hospital’s infrastructure signifies a commitment to improving healthcare services for children in the region. In light of the ongoing work, it is important for the community to support these initiatives as they reinforce the broader goal of enhancing public health across various facilities, similar to improvements recently undertaken at St Giles Psychiatric Hospital, where significant attention is also being given to refurbishing and expanding services.
This positive step forward reflects the government’s commitment to addressing healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that essential services continue to evolve and meet the needs of the community.
