The Labasa Town Council is considering the possibility of hosting the Fiji Football Association’s FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) tournament. Paul Jaduram, the chairperson of the council’s special administrator, made this statement following the success of the Extra Supermarket Labasa football team in winning this year’s IDC tournament in Lautoka.
Jaduram expressed to SUNsports that if the Fiji FA approves their request, it would be an ideal time to host the IDC, as Labasa last did so in 1975, marking 50 years since then. The town previously hosted the IDC in 1969.
He mentioned that the Fiji FA has specific requirements that must be fulfilled before the tournament can be held in Labasa. One of these requirements is the availability of two and a half playing pitches at Subrail Park, accommodating nearly 20 district teams in three divisions.
The main pitch would host the Super Premier matches, while Premier and Senior division games would take place on the second ground. The additional half pitch is intended for training and warming up.
Jaduram noted that the recently constructed Fiji FA Labasa Academy features two standard pitches, which could be utilized as alternative venues for the Premier and Senior division matches. He also indicated that the council is looking at 2026 as a possible date to bring the IDC back to Labasa.
As the former president of Labasa FA, Jaduram expressed his commitment to successfully hosting the IDC in the town. He also emphasized the economic benefits that hosting the tournament could bring, as it would attract football fans from Viti Levu and beyond, boosting the local economy during the week-long event.
