The Labasa Town Council is considering the possibility of hosting the FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) tournament organized by the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA). This discussion follows the recent victory of the Extra Supermarket Labasa football team at this year’s IDC tournament held in Lautoka.
Council special administrator’s chairperson Paul Jaduram expressed that if Fiji FA accepts their request, it would be a significant milestone since Labasa last hosted the IDC in 1975, marking 50 years since that event. Previously, Labasa also hosted the IDC in 1969.
Jaduram noted that Fiji FA has specific requirements that must be fulfilled before the event can take place in Labasa. One such requirement is the availability of two and a half playing pitches at Subrail Park, as nearly 20 district teams will compete in three divisions.
The main pitch would serve the Super Premier competition, while the Premier and Senior division matches could take place on another field. The extra half pitch would be reserved for training and warm-up sessions.
Jaduram also mentioned that the newly constructed Fiji FA Labasa Academy includes two standard pitches, which could serve as alternative venues for the Premier and Senior matches. He indicated that while the council is eager to host the IDC in the near future, they are also aiming for 2026 as a potential return year for the tournament to Labasa.
As a former president of Labasa FA, Jaduram is committed to bringing the IDC back to the town. He highlighted the economic benefits of hosting the tournament, noting that it would attract football fans from Viti Levu and international visitors, consequently boosting the town’s economy during the week-long event.
