Shoppers in Labasa are experiencing difficulties this Christmas season due to rising vegetable prices, a result of limited supply reaching the market. Despite these increases, many residents are still purchasing fresh produce to celebrate the festive period, recognizing that Christmas is an essential time for both vendors and consumers.
Waisea Makulau, President of the Labasa Vendors Association, noted that the price surge was anticipated. With an ongoing low supply of vegetables over the months, the demand has notably spiked during the holiday season. “As expected, the prices of vegetables here at the Labasa Market are high. Cabbage is selling for $7 a bundle, and tubua is going for $4 a bundle. That is the reality, but people are still buying because we all need these for Christmas,” he explained.
The core issue behind the price increase stems from the persistent limited supply that has affected the market, which has continued into the seasonal peak of demand. Farmer Iliesa Tulaba from Waisali mentioned that the Christmas season is particularly busy, with farmers opting to sell directly at the market to meet consumer needs for root crops and vegetables. “For us farmers, this is an annual event to come and sell at the Labasa Market. We know people need root crops and vegetables, so it’s about bringing fresh produce straight from the farm,” he said.
While the vegetable prices have soared, root crops are still readily available at the Labasa Market, with farmers coming from as far as Savusavu. Many of them take this opportunity not only to sell their produce but also to engage in Christmas shopping before heading back to their villages.
These challenges underscore the resilience of both shoppers and farmers in Labasa, who are committed to celebrating the season despite the economic pressures. As the community comes together, there remains a sense of hope and spirit during this festive period.
