Independent Member of Parliament Premila Kumar has expressed strong criticism regarding the government’s recent announcement of a -0.9 percent decrease in inflation for April 2025. While this marks the lowest inflation rate reported by the World Bank since May 2021, Ms. Kumar argues that the celebration of this figure is disconnected from the everyday realities faced by many Fijian families.

Kumar highlighted that despite this statistical drop, families continue to grapple with escalating costs in essential areas including food, rent, and medical expenses. “The recent announcement may be statistically significant, but it does not reflect the day-to-day reality for thousands of Fijian families still struggling to make ends meet,” she stated. She pointed out that the decline in inflation does not equate to falling prices—rather, it indicates a slower rate of increase. “It simply means the rate at which prices are increasing has slowed down,” she explained.

She emphasized that the government’s claims of credit for this decline overlook critical external factors influencing these trends, such as falling international fuel prices and improved global supply chains. She asserted that these developments are beyond the control of the Fijian government and do not stem from any internal policy changes.

Kumar has previously criticized government policies like the recent hike in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 9 to 15 percent, arguing that these measures have only exacerbated the cost-of-living crisis. She stated that the VAT increases and austerity measures have led to significant hardship for ordinary citizens, and called for the government to be more accountable in its approach to economic management, rather than relying on selective statistics or temporary trends.

Her concerns echo sentiments seen in previous critiques where she called for comprehensive economic plans. She argued for support measures such as maintaining accessible student loan options and creating strategies that would bolster local businesses and infrastructure, promoting sustainable economic growth. Kumar’s advocacy for a focus on long-term solutions suggests a path forward to address the persistent struggles faced by many citizens.

As Kumar continues to challenge the government’s economic narrative, there is hope that increased awareness and dialogue around these issues may pave the way for more inclusive and effective economic policies in Fiji. This broader engagement can foster an environment where all citizens can thrive, advocating for policies that truly reflect their needs.
