The Fiji women’s football team, known as the Kulas, faced a disappointing end to their OFC Women’s Nations Cup campaign with a 2-1 loss against Papua New Guinea in the semi-finals held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This defeat marks yet another hurdle as they pursue their goal of capturing their first championship title in this tournament.

Papua New Guinea took an early lead with goals from Keren Kalapai in the 25th minute and Ramona Padio in the 33rd minute, capitalizing on defensive mistakes by Fiji. Despite the setback, Fiji managed to respond quickly with a goal from Narieta Leba in the 34th minute, reigniting hopes for a comeback. However, despite a strong second-half effort, Fiji could not find the equalizer.

Head coach Angeline Chua recognized the challenge of this match but commended her team’s effort and cohesion throughout the tournament. “We prepared and played our best. Football is a game of mistakes, and we made a couple that cost us,” she noted, reinforcing the importance of learning from this experience as they set their sights on the third-place playoff.

The defeat not only underscores the Kulas’ competitive spirit but also highlights the growth of women’s football within Fiji, as veteran defender Naomi Waqanidrola pointed out the team’s efforts and learning journey. The Kulas have inspired many through their resilience, and with community support, there’s optimism that they can build on this experience for future success.

Fiji’s journey is reflective of their potential and the increasing recognition of women’s sports in the region. Although this semi-final loss is a setback, it opens new avenues for development, and with a young and talented squad, there remains hope for a brighter future in women’s football for Fiji.
