The Fiji women’s football team, known as the Kulas, experienced heartbreak in their semi-final match of the 2025 OFC Women’s Nations Cup, falling to Papua New Guinea with a score of 2-1. This loss ended their dreams of securing a final berth and was a tough lesson in navigating pressure and overcoming adversity.

Head coach Angeline Chua expressed her disappointment yet highlighted the resilience of her team. “We came prepared and played our best, but this is a game of mistakes, and a few costly ones influenced the outcome,” she stated. Despite the setback, Chua emphasized the importance of using this experience for future growth.

Papua New Guinea, the defending champions, opened the game with two quick goals, capitalizing on defensive errors from Fiji. However, the Kulas did manage to respond just before halftime when young striker Narieta Leba scored, igniting hopes of a comeback. The momentum seemed to briefly shift, but Fiji struggled to penetrate PNG’s sturdy defense in the second half, ultimately leading to regrets about missed chances.

As the Kulas prepare for their third-place playoff against Samoa, morale remains a critical focus for the coach and her squad. “We aim to restore our spirits and prepare for how to win the next game,” Chua remarked. Mental health and player recovery will be paramount as the team aims to finish the tournament on a positive note.

Despite this major disappointment, the Kulas are determined to approach the upcoming match with renewed spirit. With a young and evolving team, tomorrow’s game serves not only as an opportunity to win a bronze medal but also as a chance to showcase their growth and dedication to the game.

Fiji will take on Samoa at 3:30 PM at the HFC Bank Stadium, aiming to rally support from their fans and end the tournament with a strong performance. Meanwhile, the final will feature Papua New Guinea against the Solomon Islands, marking a historic moment for the latter, who have reached the final for the first time.

As the Kulas continue their journey, they highlight the upward trajectory of women’s football in Fiji, inspiring future generations of athletes with their grit and determination in the face of challenges.
