Residents of Hawaii Street in Korovuto, Nadi, are expressing their frustration over persistent issues with water pipe damage attributed to heavy vehicles navigating the area. These issues have led to inflated water bills and ongoing problems with low water pressure for approximately 25 households in the community.
Residents report that their water meters are situated at the entrance to the settlement, necessitating pipes to run above ground for more than a kilometer to reach their homes. Abhay Nand, a local resident, emphasized that the pipes bear frequent damage from heavy vehicles and the burning of rubbish near the pipes. This has disrupted the water supply, causing residents to face unexpectedly high bills; Nand recounted a time when he incurred charges exceeding $180 due to a leak stemming from a damaged pipe.
The situation is further complicated by leaks from burst pipes, which not only squander water but also exacerbate the poor condition of the settlement’s unpaved roads. Fellow resident Susan Lata echoed Nand’s sentiments, stating that the low water pressure makes daily chores significantly more challenging.
In light of these ongoing issues, the community has collectively approached the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) with requests to relocate the main pipe underground or install water meters closer to each house. However, they have expressed disappointment with WAF’s response, claiming the authority has provided little assistance.
Residents are hopeful that with further attention to their plight, improvements can be made to their water supply issues, ultimately leading to lower bills and enhanced living conditions. Queries have been directed to WAF for further clarification on this matter.
