The Korovatu Picnic Spot near Labasa town has flourished, enhancing the seaside experience for both locals and tourists. Rishi Chand, the owner, highlights that this spot not only promotes outdoor tourism but also significantly contributes to the local economy through various developments. These include the installation of seven outdoor sheds, public restrooms, and a venue suitable for hosting events.

Chand has noted the evolution of the picnic spot from a modest beginning operated by his grandfather to its current expanded state, featuring multiple facilities for visitors. Current enhancements include five to eight villas aimed at providing accommodation for weekend getaways. However, a significant challenge remains, as the facilities rely on solar energy, and securing a reliable power supply is critical to cater to increasing visitor numbers.

Additionally, caretaker Monish Karan emphasizes the need for safety during peak times, such as weekends and public holidays, when larger crowds gather. The picnic spot is also gaining popularity as a backdrop for music videos and photoshoots, further promoting the Friendly North as a desirable tourism destination.

This development aligns with ongoing efforts in the region to capitalize on tourism. Recent reports have detailed an ambitious multi-million-dollar project led by Northern New City Tourism Development Pte Limited, which aims to enhance the area around Korovatu with hotels, a resort, and a range of tourist amenities. The initiatives occurring in tandem could significantly revitalize the local economy and attract even more visitors to the region.

Together, these developments present a hopeful outlook for Korovatu and its surroundings, potentially transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant hub for tourism and community engagement.
