The community of Koro Island is actively advocating for more healthcare resources, notably calling for an additional doctor to meet the needs of its population of around 3,000 residents. This concern was prominently discussed during the Lomaiviti Provincial Council meeting in Suva, where a representative from Koro highlighted that the island is currently supported by only one doctor, a situation residents find inadequate to address the community’s healthcare requirements.

This issue has been a recurring topic in various district meetings, emphasizing the urgency felt by residents for improved healthcare access. Following the council meeting, the matter is anticipated to be formally submitted to the government for further actions to address the healthcare shortfall.

In related discussions, there have also been significant concerns raised about the overall state of healthcare services on Koro Island. Observations from recent visits by government officials noted staffing shortages across the island’s health facilities, impacting effective service delivery. The sole doctor at the Nasau station along with limited nursing staff strains the healthcare services available to the community.

Additionally, the emphasis on healthcare is not isolated; discussions during a recent ministerial delegation visit to Koro revealed broader developmental issues, including the pressing need for improved road infrastructure and vehicle repair services, which are also critical to supporting healthcare access.

The ongoing dialogue and advocacy by community members represents a hopeful persistence for improvements. With their voices championing the need for additional medical support and services, there is potential for positive change in the health landscape of Koro Island, fostering a healthier future for its residents.
