Residents of Koro Island are currently coping with the aftermath of Category 2 Tropical Cyclone Rae, which has raised concerns but so far has left villagers safe. According to Mudu District Representative Aporosa Kaunisela, while heavy rain persists, wind strength has diminished. Swift action by local government officials ensured that preparedness measures were in place, with Heads of Departments conducting rounds to assess the situation.

Evacuation centres across the island have been filled, and although some minor damage has been reported, the community has come together to secure homes vulnerable to natural disasters. This is particularly significant given that Koro Island endured one of the most devastating storms in recent history: Tropical Cyclone Winston, which struck approximately eight years ago.

Similar sentiments are echoed in other regions affected by Cyclone Rae, such as Mago Island, where residents were well-prepared, having taken precautions ahead of the storm. Evacuation measures and community support mechanisms have proven to be vital in addressing the challenges posed by the cyclone. Past experiences have guided residents to not only follow safety advisories but also to reinforce their solidarity in the face of adversity.

Weather forecasts from the Fiji Meteorological Service indicate that while the cyclone has weakened, alert levels remain high, calling for continued vigilance. Communities are reminded of the critical importance of staying informed and prepared, as winds and heavy rainfall could impact more regions across Fiji.

The collective efforts and proactive measures taken by Koro and nearby communities they exemplify resilience. With a history that shows the strength of solidarity during natural disasters, there remains a hopeful outlook that together, these communities can effectively navigate the challenges ahead, showcasing their remarkable ability to support one another in tough times.
