The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways in Fiji has announced the receipt of $1 million worth of agricultural machinery from the Government of the Republic of Korea, marking a significant advancement for the country’s livestock sector. This initiative is expected to substantially aid farmers in addressing feed shortages that have arisen due to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters.
Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized the importance of the new equipment, which includes tractors, harvesters, and balers, stating that it will enhance silage production and feed storage. The modernization of pasture management through this machinery is anticipated to elevate livestock productivity and decrease reliance on imported feed, contributing positively to Fiji’s agricultural self-sufficiency.
Minister Tunabuna expressed gratitude to the Korean Government for its invaluable support, highlighting that this partnership will not only strengthen food security but also improve the livelihoods of rural communities. Acting Korean Ambassador Myongjun Kim echoed these sentiments, expressing enthusiasm for ongoing collaboration aimed at fostering Fiji’s agricultural development.
The equipment will be utilized across the nation through comprehensive farmer training and extension programs, ensuring that the benefits of this contribution will reach farmers effectively. This development signifies a step towards enhancing food sustainability in Fiji, fostering resilience in the agricultural sector against the challenges posed by climate change.
