The Kontiki Finance Pineapple Cup Lawn Bowling Competition commenced at the Suva Bowling Club recently, drawing an impressive array of participants eager to claim this prestigious trophy. The club’s president, Ramesh Chand, highlighted the remarkable turnout, with over 50 bowlers, including 16 female competitors, participating on the first day. Chand noted this year’s competition has attracted many seasoned bowlers, some of whom have competed for over a decade without clinching the win, emphasizing the event’s popularity and challenge.
The tournament’s history dates back to 1928 when C.C. Clark won the inaugural Pineapple Cup. Except for 2000, this event has been a key fixture in Fiji’s sports calendar, maintaining its tradition and prestige. The current titleholders, Semesa Naiseruvati and Sainiana Walker, are defending their championships under stiff competition.
Kontiki Finance significantly supports the tournament, providing a $5,000 sponsorship that aids in the event’s smooth operation. This continued backing highlights Kontiki Finance’s commitment to promoting local sports and community involvement, which has been a recurring theme in their ongoing sponsorships of both the Pineapple and Banana Cups.
The Pineapple Cup symbolizes more than just a contest; it represents decades of sporting tradition and community spirit. With a competitive atmosphere and a mix of both seasoned and emerging bowlers, the event exemplifies the dedication and camaraderie inherent in lawn bowling. As the competition enters its final stages, participants and spectators alike are eager to see who will emerge victorious in this longstanding tradition.
