Fiji Airways men’s 7s coach Osea Kolinisau has emphasized that the selection process for the national squad is open to all talented players, irrespective of their current playing circumstances. After a scrimmage with the visiting British Army 7s team, Kolinisau expressed gratitude for the competitive experience and acknowledged the importance of diverse opposition in honing his squad’s skills.
The Olympic gold medallist observed that the British Army capitalized on a few mistakes made by Fiji, leading to two tries, which presented crucial learning opportunities for his team. Kolinisau remarked, “Those are areas we want to fix as a team. But overall it was a good session, and I was grateful to the boys, especially the British Army players, for coming in and pushing us.”
Importantly, he reinforced a clear message to players outside the core professional group: national selection remains accessible. “I told them straight that selection is not limited to the boys playing in the PG programme. Me and the management team are always looking for talent,” he said. Kolinisau highlighted that impressive performances at club and invitational levels will be recognized, encouraging deserving players to showcase their abilities in training camps.
The approach reflects Fiji’s commitment to fostering depth and competition within the men’s 7s team as they prepare for upcoming challenges. Kolinisau is also gearing up to field a youthful side for the Coral Coast 7s tournament set to kick off at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Fans can enjoy live coverage of the event on FBC Sports, with overseas viewers able to catch the action on Viti+ for $99 FJD.
This inclusive strategy not only aims to strengthen the national squad but also inspires a new generation of players eager to represent their country on the international stage.
