Football enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement as the 96th TISI Sangam Convention officially kicks off in Ba this afternoon. The event features a thrilling opening match between defending champions Nadi TIV and Valley TIV, set to take place at 4 PM in the Super Premier Division.
This year’s convention is expected to witness fierce competition with a remarkable total of 74 football teams participating, which includes 49 local teams alongside 25 teams from overseas, hailing from New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and Canada. Matches will unfold across four divisions:
1. **Super Premier Division** – 32 teams placed in eight pools
2. **Premier Division** – 10 teams divided into three pools
3. **Masters category** – 25 teams
4. **Legends division** – 7 teams
Upendra Gounder, the Games Committee chairman, announced that a total of 17 different grounds in Ba will host the matches. Not limited to football, the convention will also feature netball and volleyball competitions starting Saturday, and snooker matches will occur at the South Seas Club in Lautoka.
The event is projected to attract around 4,000 to 5,000 spectators from various parts of the world, offering a marvelous opportunity to unite communities through the love of sports and cultural celebrations. Adding to the excitement, several former district and national football representatives will participate, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the tournament.
“After a long time, we are bringing the convention back to Ba. We just hope for good weather so everyone can enjoy the full experience,” Gounder remarked.
With all eyes on the defending champions, Nadi TIV aims for a strong start in their title defense, setting the stage for an action-packed weekend filled with football and festivities that promise to leave an unforgettable impression on players and fans alike.
