The Koronivia Research Station in Nausori is actively pursuing solutions to the issue of kava dieback, though progress has been described as limited. During recent consultations regarding the Kava Bill in the Central Division, farmers voiced their concerns about substantial crop losses that are dampening enthusiasm for the kava industry.

Toloi Vasuidreketi, a Research Officer at Koronivia, acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the importance of ongoing research, improved farm management practices, and robust support for farmers affected by kava dieback. He stated, “At the moment, there is no cure. We are testing the results of our current methods, but they are not yet effective, so further research is needed. For now, farmers are advised to follow the proposed farming practices to help reduce the spread.”

Vasuidreketi noted that discussions surrounding the Kava Bill are crucial for developing informed policies that can bolster the industry while tackling challenges like plant diseases. There is a sense of hope that with continued research and community engagement, solutions may be found to revive the kava industry and mitigate the impact of dieback on farmers.
