Kaunikuila Basketball Club will kick off its 2026 campaign with the McDonald’s Kaunikuila Basketball Cup at Vodafone Hall A in Suva from March 26-28, the club has confirmed. Organised under the Central Basketball Association banner, the three-day event will bring 18 teams to the court — six women’s sides and 12 men’s teams — drawn from Suva and Nadi.
Club president Ben Naisau said the tournament is the first competitive test for Kaunikuila and its rivals this year and will offer players valuable game time after an active 2025. “Fans and spectators can expect high intensity basketball, fast-paced action, and a very competitive atmosphere,” Naisau said, adding that the teams arriving are “well prepared and eager to prove themselves.” He described the Cup as a showcase of talent, teamwork and passion that will set the tone for the season.
The event is backed by McDonald’s and a cohort of supporting sponsors, whom Naisau thanked alongside players and supporters for their role in getting the tournament off the ground. The club says the three days will feature rapid fixtures designed to test depth and conditioning while providing local basketball followers with consistent, high-quality matchups early in the calendar year.
Kaunikuila’s focus heading into 2026 is continuity and development after what the president called a successful 2025. Last year the club staged two tournaments and mounted an international tour to New Caledonia, where both its men’s and women’s teams recorded notable rankings. Naisau framed the upcoming Cup as part of a deliberate plan to build on that momentum by sharpening performance standards and accelerating player development pathways.
While acknowledging the pressure that comes with hosting the season’s opening competition, Naisau stressed Kaunikuila’s reliance on unity and family-style support. “The first competition of the year is always important. It sets the tone for the season and gives teams a benchmark to measure themselves,” he said, urging the basketball community to rally behind the event.
The McDonald’s Kaunikuila Basketball Cup is the latest addition to an increasingly busy local calendar as clubs prepare for regional tournaments and domestic leagues. For Kaunikuila, the March competition is not only about immediate results but also about laying a foundation for sustained growth, providing competitive minutes to emerging players and strengthening community ties through sport.
Further details on game schedules, participating club lists and ticketing arrangements are expected to be released by the Central Basketball Association and Kaunikuila in the coming weeks as teams finalise preparations for the Vodafone Hall A tournament.
