The High Court in Suva is set to hear detailed submissions concerning the criminal case against former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull announced that Kamikamica’s application for a permanent stay of proceedings has been scheduled for March 25, 2026.
Kamikamica faces a charge of perjury after allegedly making a false statement under oath, denying any involvement in the appointment of former FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. He is also charged with providing false information to a public servant, specifically regarding his testimony to a Commission of Inquiry (COI). These alleged offenses occurred between December 1 of the previous year and March 31 of this year.
Moreover, Kamikamica’s attorney, Wylie Clarke, proposed that the application for a permanent stay from both Kamikamica and former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, be considered together. Clarke argued that the two applications involve comparable questions about the legitimacy of Acting FICAC Commissioner Lavi Rokoika’s appointment. The court learned that Professor Prasad’s case is currently under the jurisdiction of Justice Dane Tuiqereqere in Suva. The proceedings for this case have been postponed until February 5 for further mention.
This ongoing legal situation highlights the complexities surrounding government appointments and the accountability of officials, and both defendants await the court’s resolution with significant implications for their futures.
