The Ministry of Health & Medical Services’ Echo Surgical Team, in collaboration with Sai Prema and Heart Heroes Fiji, recently completed a three-day heart echo screening program across Kadavu. This initiative took place at health facilities in Daviqele, Kavala, and Vunisea, bringing specialized cardiac screening services to island communities. The outreach is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry to combat cardiovascular disease throughout Fiji.
Cardiovascular diseases are a significant health concern in Fiji, being the leading cause of death and contributing to premature mortality. These conditions are primarily categorized as non-communicable diseases and are often linked to lifestyle choices, such as poor nutrition, inadequate physical activity, smoking, and harmful alcohol consumption.
The outreach program aimed to raise awareness and promote early screening for heart-related health issues, enabling prompt medical intervention. By addressing these conditions at an early stage, the initiative seeks to enhance long-term health outcomes for the residents of Kadavu and alleviate the burden on families and communities. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to tackling cardiovascular disease and improving the overall health of the population.
