The recently launched Kadavu Development Plan 2025–2035 aims to empower the local population and address the longstanding challenges faced by the people of Kadavu, according to Isikeli Vuniwaqa, the chairman of the provincial council. This strategic plan was developed over a two-year period, emphasizing community involvement and consultation with various stakeholders, including provincial council members and government representatives.
Mr. Vuniwaqa noted that Kadavu’s geographical isolation, characterized by hilly terrain and limited access primarily by water, has hindered development efforts for decades. While improvements in infrastructure have begun to alleviate some issues, significant challenges remain, particularly in transportation between Kadavu and Suva, as well as communication networks that are currently inferior compared to other provinces.
The launch of the development plan took place at the Great Council of Chiefs’ complex in Suva and involved significant collaboration and commitment from various parties. Development committee chairman Akuila Masi highlighted that the plan focuses on five key priority areas, specifically targeting Kadavu’s geographical challenges. He expressed the intention to revitalize small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and enhance market access, showcasing the necessity to move beyond community-level subsistence business practices.
This initiative represents a hopeful step towards creating new opportunities for the people of Kadavu, emphasizing a vision of inclusive development that encompasses the diverse voices and needs of the community. As the plan unfolds, it is expected to provide a clearer pathway for the province’s growth and improved living conditions for its residents.
