A 56-year-old man has been sentenced to 11 years and 10 months in prison, with a minimum non-parole period of eight years and four months, after being convicted of raping and assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Suva. The sentencing, handed down by the Suva High Court, was the result of convictions on two counts of indecent assault, one count of sexual assault, and one count of rape.

The incidents took place in August 2022 when the victim, while traveling in the man’s vehicle, was assaulted upon their arrival at his destination to pick up his daughter. Further assaults occurred during a visit to his home in March 2023.

Throughout the trial, the victim shared her ongoing struggles with the emotional aftermath of the incidents, highlighting a profound loss of trust in others and the persistent trauma that has impacted her mental well-being, fueling feelings of fear and depression, even as she feels she is beginning to heal.

The defense attempted to present mitigating factors, including the man’s role as the primary provider for his family and his status as a first-time offender facing serious medical issues. However, the court emphasized the severe ramifications of his actions on the victim’s life, issuing a permanent domestic violence restraining order to ensure her safety and prevent any future contact.

This case highlights the urgent and significant issue of sexual violence in society and emphasizes the need for continued focus on protecting vulnerable individuals and delivering justice for victims. The resilience of survivors and their journeys towards recovery remain critical components in the fight against such heinous acts.
