A woman has finally seen justice served, two decades after experiencing abhorrent abuse at the hands of her father. The Lautoka High Court has sentenced the 67-year-old man to 15 years in prison for repeatedly raping his daughter, who was only 12 years old at the time of these crimes, which spanned from 2002.

The court was informed that, during this traumatic period, the victim and her younger siblings were left under their father’s care. The attacks began after a sports event, and the perpetrator systematically abused his daughter, even going so far as to create a hidden entrance in the floor of her bedroom to facilitate the repeated assaults. He also used intimidation tactics, threatening her to remain silent about the abuse.

Now 34 years old, the victim confided in her ex-husband about her suffering after years of enduring the trauma in silence. The breakthrough came when the details of her ordeal began to circulate in their community, prompting her to report the incidents to law enforcement.

During sentencing, High Court Judge Aruna Aluthge highlighted the deep betrayal of trust by the father, emphasizing that he violated the very norms expected from a parental figure. The judge acknowledged the lasting psychological scars on the victim, underscoring the need for stringent consequences for such heinous crimes against minors.

The sentenced man is eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 12 years, and following this ruling, there remains an option for him to appeal within 30 days.

This case highlights significant societal concerns regarding familial abuse and the urgent need for protective measures for vulnerable children. It serves as a reminder that justice can prevail, even against the odds, and it amplifies the call for better safeguards against sexual violence. As society progresses, initiatives to support survivors and hold offenders accountable will illuminate a path toward healing and prevention.
